Always Bullish

One of my favorite positions at my job was when I worked with various Professional Sports teams. I tried to get them to stay at our hotel(s) when on the road for games.
I especially loved working with NBA teams. Many of the front office people became my friends.
One day I received a call that a basketball player was going to win an award with the NBA and the event was going to be held at one of my hotels. So, I cancelled all plans that day and rushed up to the hotel so I could attend.
While I was there, I saw the head Coach and went over and introduced myself. The funny thing is, he thought we already knew each other. We quickly determined my friends who work for that team had a picture of all of us in their cube. That is why I looked familiar to him. I said, trust me Coach, if we would have met, I would have remembered!
Anyway, we go on to have a great conversation. Every couple of minutes a reporter would come up to talk to him and he would excuse himself and say, don't go anywhere, I will be right back.
As I was getting ready to leave, someone pointed out to me that an Assistant Coach that I have helped many times over the years (but never met) was also in the crowd. I went over to introduce myself as we only ever talked on the phone.
This Assistant Coach said to me, let me do you a favor since you have always been so nice helping me. I want to introduce you to our head Coach. I said oh, way ahead of you! You didn't see me chatting him up?
He laughed and said he didn't. And, I said to the Assistant Coach, I hear the Head Coach is single, do you think he is in my wheelhouse?
The Assistant Coach said, you are single? I have worked with you for 5 years and never knew that. I said, sure am!
He said, forget the Coach, he is all basketball and you would get bored with that, I want to introduce you to a friend of mine who used to live in Chicago, moved to Ohio and is now moving back in the city. Will you go out with him? He said he is my best friend and I think you two would get along great. I said, have we met? Give him my number!
A couple of days later I receive a call from his friend. You will never believe it.
We start chatting and he said Sue, we have already gone out! I met you 5 years ago, and we went to a Cubs game, Cullen's after, etc. He started naming my friends to me. Uh oh.
I couldn't pick this guy out of a line up and he is going on and on. Once again, this town ain't big enough!
Now, I think perhaps the Universe is telling us to give it another try as I honestly don't remember what happened the first time. So, we set up a date.
Once I saw him, he definitely looked familiar. We had quite a bit in common and had a great time. We then went out a couple more times.
The last time we went out, we had a great time watching football on a Sunday and he said we will make plans again.
A couple of days later, I received a text from him saying he had to go to Florida. His Mom lives there, fell and broke her hip, so he wasn’t sure how long he will be visiting. Being a family girl as well, I said, no problem, good luck, and let me know when you are back.
Guess what? Never heard from him again. No idea what happened?
I put this in the “he must have died” category in my mind (kidding of course). I created that category to bring closure when some times there is none.
Lesson learned: Sometimes the Universe is just kidding by bringing someone back in your life, but you have to investigate to find out!
