I lived in a “Friends” show type of atmosphere for a couple of years after college. I lived with a roommate and there were 4 guys living downstairs. We were all very close and didn’t even lock our doors. It was a great transition from my college days.

My neighbor had a picture of a group of us in his office at work. One of his co-workers comes over and asks about the blonde, my neighbor says she is single, call her.

I talked to this guy on the phone and learned a little about him.

He said he is a former model and now works at the steel mills. I am generally not into the model type, but, my friend says he is a good guy, so I figure I would give it a shot.

We decide to go out on a Saturday night. He is from Indiana so is not at all familiar with the city or how busy it is on a weekend for dinner.

He arrives at my door and my expectation was for a pretty boy to be knocking. When I see him, he wasn’t that at all. I am definitely more into personality than looks, but, he built himself up to be George Clooney from our conversation.

We head out to his car and I see his license plate says “Imnoliberal”.

I mean, who puts their political affiliation on their car? This dude does.

He wants to go to a trendy part of town. I asked if we have reservations? He said, no, I’m sure it won’t be a problem. The first restaurant we go to, a 2 hour wait. We get back in the car and continue on. As we approach the 2nd restaurant, he says the dreaded, I have to tell you something. I said, go for it. He says, I am a diabetic and need to give myself a shot in the stomach, hope you don’t mind. He then proceeds to pull a kit out and undo his shirt. I have known him for all of 30 minutes. I said, I hope you don’t mind if I wait for you outside. As I see the taxis fly by, I so wanted to wave one down but didn’t. I truly felt like he could have taken care of that a bit more discreetly since I didn’t really know him.

We then get into the restaurant and he asks me if I believe in destiny as he holds my hand. The only thing I believed at that time was that I had to be done with this date!

Lesson learned? Discretion is the best way to go when you know someone for a hot minute.
